Animal Shelter
The Animal Control Facility is owned by the Town of Cedaredge. It is operated and funded by the Town, and the Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control (FCAC),a non-profit volunteer group that focuses on the health, welfare and adoption of animals in the program, grants and community donations. As a result of this combination of efforts, the facility is a "No-Kill" and will remain so, as long as there is continued support from the community.
The Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control (FCAC) was started several years ago to help the Town defray the cost of housing the animals that go through the system. It is a proven fact that the best "No-Kill" shelters are operated as a partnership between the local municipality and a non-profit support group. Cedaredge is fortunate to already have this partnership in place.
The FCAC are volunteers that assist with off-site pet adoptions, there are Dog Walkers (sometimes the dogs are walked three times a day) and there are Cat Handlers (they have been known to turn a wild cat into a wildly affectionate pet). FCAC also has a Building Committee. This committee is currently raising funds and applying for grants in order to replace the temporary structure that houses the office with a permanent building.
The cat and dog population at the facility is constantly changing. Unwanted and abandoned pets, which are picked up running loose, and pets that can no longer be kept by their owners are regularly turned into Animal Control. Once they are in the facility, the town covers the cost of feeding them for the first five days. This five-day period is required by the State of Colorado. It gives the owner a chance to find their lost pet. If the animal remains at the facility after the five days, it then becomes the medical responsibility of FCAC. The cost of spaying and neutering animals, vaccinations and food comes from community donations and FCAC. Spaying or neutering and vaccinations are required before they can be made available for adoption.
There is a $20.00 adoption fee, but that doesn’t come close to the amount of money already invested in the pet before adoption. If the new pet owner lives in the Town of Cedaredge the charge of $10.00 will be added for a license fee required in the Town for all cats and dogs. We can also microchip your dog or cat that you adopt for a charge of $35.00.
Any animal adopted through the Cedaredge Animal Control has a three-day return policy. After the three-day period, the animal can be returned to the facility, but the adoption fee will not be refunded.
The volunteers are very proud of the facility. Our community has the best Animal Control facility in Delta County and the only No-Kill Facility on the Western Slope of Colorado. Many of our adoptions are done through advertising, word of mouth, posters and walk-ins. Our volunteers are very pro-active and regularly take a selection of its available animals out into the public for off-site adoptions. Our facility is possible because of the many generous construction donations, commitment and funding provided by the Cedaredge Trustees and our many tireless volunteers. This facility is located at the end of High County Avenue (behind the Mercantile and down the hill). FCAC encourages you to stop by and visit the facility, they are not “hard sell” and they will not try to push an animal on you if you are not interested in adopting a pet. Our animals for adoption can also be viewed on the web at Petfinder.com
